Fats and oils - misunderstandings and facts

The subject of fats and oils (as well as cholesterol) is probably one of the least understood - or rather, the most misunderstood - in modern nutrition.

It is also a subject strongly influenced by multi-billion dollar vested interestsMacrobiotic books usually recommend this macrobiotic carp soup for people who are weak with cancer or people recovering from surgery as well as new mothers who have just given birth - it helps the production of breast milk! , including the interests of:

  • US roducers of corn, soybean and other vegetable oils, who launched massive campaigns to discredit rival palm oil and coconut oil

  • Pharmaceutical companies that push the sales of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.

As a result, the bulk of modern-day health advice regarding fats and oils and cholesterol are all wrong. If you follow standard health advice, you are actually increasing your risks of heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes and other degenerative diseases.

Wrong and harmful health advice regarding fats and oils include:
  • Avoid saturated fats... this is bad advice. Saturated fats are essential for many body functions. They are good for health. Saturated fats are not harmful. The widely-held belief that saturated fats cause heart disease is only a belief. It is not well supported by scientific evidence. Ober the years, many scientific studies show that people who take lots of saturated fats DO NOT develop heart disease. Find out exactly what are saturated fats and the benefits - not the harm - of saturated fats.

For additional understanding, read also about the causes of coronary heart disease.

  • Take mainly poyunsaturated fats... this is the most harmful advice ever given about fats and oils. - Polyunsaturated fats are easily damaged by heat, light and exposure to air. Once damanged, they become highly toxic. And the bulk of polyunsaturated fats being sold today is already damaged - and toxic. Learn more about the dangers of polyunsaturated fats.

  • Avoid eggs, organ meat and other high cholesterol foods - again bad advice. Cholesterol, like saturated fats, is essential for health - especially the health of the nervous system. Infants and children, in particular, need high cholesterol foods. And adults with too low levels of cholesterol - either in the blood or in the diet - risk developing nervous system disorders, including depression and suicidal tendencies. People wiith hgh cholesterol do not die sooner. But the opposite is true. People with low cholesterols die sooner from all causes of death, including cancer. Learn about Why cholesterol is not harmful as well as in what ways Cholesterol is good for health.

(Note: strictly speaking, cholesterol is classified in chemistry as a form of alcohol. So it does not belong to the category of fats and oils. But I mention it here because the subjects of fats and cholesterol are closely linked and often discussed together.)

The one piece of generally correct advice about fats and oils concerns monounsaturated fatty acids. These are widely touted to be healthy and such information is essentially correct. Click here to read more about monounsaturated fatty acids like olive oil, sesame oil and peanut oil.

But even here, there are problems. And the biggest problem of all is the widely touted idea that Canola oil - which is suppoed to have the "ideal" combination of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fats - is the healthiest amongst all oils and fats.

This is the result of yet another highly successful marketing campaign. Canola is a 100 percent articificial oil. It is a genetically modified food. In nature, there is no such thing as a "Canola plant". Instead, it was genetically modified from the rapeseed plant, whose oil was originally toxic.

Among the many problems of canola oil is that your cooking pots and pans will be very sticky and hard to wash. Imagine what that means when you put canola oil inside your body. Also, canola oil inhibits growth and is not allowed to be used in infant formula.

Click here to find out exactly what is canola oil, what are the dangers of canola oil and why the whole canola oil business is a scam!

Finally, no discussion about fats and oils is complete without looking at Trans fats. Yet this is one subject that some health authorities, such as the Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB), simply gloss over with a mere few short sentences about its dangers. Find out more about What are trans fats and why are trans fats bad.

Outrageous statements about fats and oils?

It may seem that I am making outrageous statements about fats and oils, which run contrary to what almost every nutritionist, doctor, major health association and government health authority might tell you.

But it is not me who is making these statements. I am but a writer and researcher on health and the information that I present on this website all originated from learned scientists, researchers and people of wisdom.

In this case, the information come from a small group of scientists who specialise in the field of fats and oils. They are a group of scientists who dare to seek and report the truth rather than simply accept what the majority believes.

How do I know these scientists are correct?

I won't claim to be 100 percent sure. But I must admit that, initially, I was also sceptical.

Although I am not a vegetarian, except for a brief six-months during the mid-1990s, I always held the view that meat is "bad for health". So when I first read that saturated fats and cholesterol (found mainly or only in meat products) are good for health, my immediate reaction was that some people are trying to justify their meat-loving lifestyles.

But when I read on - with an open mind - I was wowed! After studying about health for more than 20 years, I was coming across a lot of "new" information for the first time. What I read was information - facts and research findings about fats and oils - and not just theories and beliefs.

There is too much information to present on this one page. So do click on the links to learn more about...
