Pertussis vaccine risks

John Yeo discusses Pertussis / whooping cough vaccine risks in Part II of his sharing about vaccination and autism. This article appeared as part of a special report in a 1995 issue of The Good Life, which focused on bacteria and viruses, infectious diseases, immunity, vaccination and other related issues.

Today, John runs the Autism Recovery Centre, offering the Defeat Autism Now! approach to treating autism -- using nutritional supplements, heavy metal detoxification, hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy and other means.

Meanwhile, the focus has shifted to the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine and to vaccines in general as almost all vaccines use thimerosal, which contains toxic mercury, as a preservative.

‘Crude vaccine’

Continued from Part I...

Why is this vaccine so nasty?

With most vaccines, researchers are able to isolate the signature of the bacteria – the parts that enable our body to recognize it – from the parts that cause trouble. In this way, only the signature needs to be given so that the body would develop immunity without suffering adverse effects.

With pertussis, scientists are still unable to isolate the signature. So they use what is called a “crude vaccine”, which contains the whole bacteria, in a weakened form. So when a child is vaccinated, there is a risk that the child might develop pertussis, instead of just an immunity against it. The risk is obviously higher if the child’s immune system is weak to begin with.

Doctors are, of course aware of such risks. But parents are almost never warned about them -- because the number of children who might be affected is considered “statistically insignificant”.

This tantamounts to playing Russian Roulette with our children. Except that usually, only the doctors know that such a dangerous game is being played. Parents assume that whatever injections doctors give must be safe. The usual argument for mass vaccination is that the benefits outweigh the risks -- that it is better to avoid whooping cough even if this means putting children at risk. '

Is vaccination that beneficial?

We are told that vaccination saved the world from whooping cough and other killer diseases. But if we examine the medical statistics, we will discover that such diseases were on the decline well before there was vaccination. In the case of pertussis, the incidence had dropped by more than 90 percent during the decade before vaccination was introduced.

Also, the disease had become less severe, and the death rate had already dropped to nearly zero. This happened because of improved sanitation, better nutrition and better living conditions. Not because of vaccination, antibiotics or other medical “miracles”.

Today, some countries have stopped using the pertussis vaccine on mass scale. As to be expected, the number of whooping cough cases has increased in these countries. However, claims for brain damage due to vaccination have also dried up.

Those who did get infected with whooping cough suffered less severely. And they don’t get infected again even when directly exposed to the bacteria later on. Yet those who have been fully vaccinated against pertussis still catch the disease sometimes. There is no guarantee.

Given the circumstances, it is perhaps better to forego the vaccine and take our chances with whooping cough. Or opt for a milder approach, like homoeopathic “vaccines”.

Under Singapore laws, pertussis vaccination is not compulsory. But not many parents are aware of this. Many doctors actively discourage opting out because the risk of brain damage is considered “insignificant” – only a small fraction of 1 percent.

Well, when you look into the eyes of your own brain-damaged child, the statistic is 100 percent.
